Bike Packing Europe Gear Set Up including weights (and links to each product)
Bike Setup:
The Grizl is built for bike packing with a max 120kg load, including rider, bike, belongings & anything that physically rolls with you. This adds up very quickly, especially for heavier riders. Sturdy enough to take some hits but light enough to hike with through muddy trails when needed. I brought this online through Canyon, delivered to my doorstep 3 days later & their measurements were very accurate (I opted for the XL rather than the 2XL after realising how tall the 2XL would be!). Hard to beat that and much easier than riding home from a shop of any kind. Plus I now have a bike box to ship/fly with anywhere around the world.
Every product has been linked (some of which affiliates that are no extra cost to you but help keep me pedalling around the world receiving a small percentage of the sale)
This blog post will be updated as inevitably things change. Upgrades happen and over time parts wear, you find out what is and isn’t as waterproof as descriptions say.
Canyon Grizl 6 CF - XL - Pineapple Gummy (€1600 / $2560 AUD / $1800 USD inc delivery)
9.98kg
45mm Schwalbe G-One RX Performance Tyre
Canyon HB0067 Dropbars
Quick mount points for 3.1 system
Used more as a backup rack for groceries or pizzas brought on the road. Handy extra space
The most underrated item on any bike. Snacks. Water. Gels. Sturdy and easily accessible.
Vague Top Tube Bag 1L
312g
Paired perfectly with Shimano SD501 Sandals with cleats. Great for summer riding or waterproof socks for the wetter days.
Onboard:
Having just moved over from the Apple Watch, the battery life on this is incredible! 28 days in smartwatch mode & after a week of accurate tracking +/- 8 hours per day, using flashlight etc. 20% battery left blew my mind!
Garmin Edge 540 + Ravemen Mount
This bike computer pairs perfectly above the FR1100 front light for a slimline setup. Buttons rather than touchscreen are perfect while riding with gloves/rainy days & routes sent directly from Apple Maps makes it very quick to use.
Lamicall Mini Electric Bike pump
Lightweight and super simple to use. Pushing out a max 120psi these are super handy to have in your bag
Weighing in at only 411g - The lightest/sturdiest folding lock (not the longest so sometimes a struggle finding a pole close enough but easily ties two bikes together as a deterrent.
Ultralight Camping Gear:
Sea to Summit Telos Evo TR2 Bike packing tent
Packed Weight: 1585g
Packed Size 32cm Wide (fits perfectly between handlebars with shorter pole sections than regular tent)
Long enough to fit 6”4 / 198cm person inside laying down
Green colour is perfect for stealth camping rather than something bright as 9 times out of 10 bike packing you’re somewhere close to a road rather than super far off on an isolated trail
Sea to Summit Spark Sleeping Bag (long) -1 degree
Comfortably fits 198cm long person which can be hard to find
Lifestraw Solo + Aquatabs
Simple water purification system. Lifestraw connected to 28mm bottle then decanted into larger drink bottles. Aquatabs for backup/super dirty water. Cost per tablet is up there, however used these hiking very remote parts of Asia & taste was great compared to other brands. Add 1 tablet, wait 30 minutes, very simple to use.
MSR pocket rocket 2 deluxe stove
The smallest camping stove setup we could find that produces an extremely hot & consistent flame with a built in regulator. Pairs with most screw on canisters (cheaper ones work perfectly well, however colder or higher altitude spots will require MSR/Jetboil/Branded canisters to avoid freezing)
Lightweight & all collapsible apart from the pot
Super lightweight but also much higher quality/tastes better than any “non stick” frypan
True luxury on the road. Completely manual (hand pump to extract shots of espresso) This is surprising how something with no electricity or battery can simply have hot water added & 30 seconds later the perfect creamy espresso shot in hand.
GSI Java Grind coffee grinder
Not the best with a few parts feeling plasticky but also in the super lightweight category, very hard to come by anything hardy so can’t have your cake and eat it too I guess!
Clothing:
Ready for 3 seasons. Shorts Always. Sandals with rainproof socks for when it rains. Merino Buff rain hail or shine.
Merino beanie
Long sleeve shirt
Short sleeve shirt
Lululemon underwear
Kathmandu puffer jacket
3L 15,000 Rain Jacket
Waterproof Socks
Camera setup:
Rugged, one touch record, D-Log colour profile
Downsized from the Air 3 and never looked back. Packs smaller, flys just as long & picture is just as sharp while only weighing 249grams
Pairs seamlessly to action camera and USB-C attachment connects easy to iPhone
No hybrid can match this camera. Photo & Video rival the top tier cameras while being at a much lower price point. I’ve used this heavily for commercial work in some of the most harsh & remote places on this planet without fail (Antarctica, Greenland, Africa safari, Australian outback etc)
99% of social media content is filmed with this. Quick, reliable, always in my pocket.
Anker Zolo power bank - 20,000
Reliable power when off grid for days on end. On the heavy side but lasts when you need it.
Used this for 3+ years daily across all 7 continents and never faulted. Charges MacBook Pro quickly and has solved ever worrying what power points I might come across.
